On Saturday, we watched the UCF football game on tv and then decided to go out for dinner. Ok we knew we were going out even before we started watching the game, but that is neither here nor there for this post.
We went to a local restaurant called Stack’d. We have been there many times in the past. I found it interesting that as we were getting seated I noticed that every party that came into the restaurant with children were seated in one area. Hmmm ok. I thought this was odd, but I don’t really care. There were a few other families and the children were not being disruptive or anything. I realize that one part of the restaurant is more of a bar area, and not seating the children in that section is fine, I just think it is odd to seat all the families with children together. It almost implies that the children should not be sat with adults groups for some reason.
So, Richard and I were talking about this observation. We also began talking about the addition of technology to meal times. When you walk into Stak’d with children the first thing they ask is if you want tablets for the children. Ummm no. First of all, there are tv’s everywhere. Second of all, why is a restaurant encouraging children to be plugged in instead of talking to their families? What lesson are we teaching the next generation? Do you really need a device to sit at the table?
When my sons were younger, we would often bring in books or paper and crayons. They did not get these items until they decided what they wanted to eat and the orders were taken by the wait staff. The items were then put away once the food arrived.
Lately it feels like 9 out of 10 restaurants have televisions going around the room. I still struggle to get the boys to stop watching tv and eat. They are pretty good at having a conversation, but it is often tied to whatever they are watching on the tv. They certainly do not need to have the tvs AND a tablet… do they?
Are these children ever going to learn to have a conversation at the dinner table? What happens when they have to go to a business dinner/luncheon? Will they just sit there and play on their phone/tablet/whatever device we have at that time?
All I know, is my boys know enough to say no thank you when they are offered the tablets at the restaurant. I know that may not be the answer they want to give, but they know it is the answer they are expected to give.

Seems like I’ve moved my grocery shopping day to Thursday. Last night we made our week’s menu at dinner time. This is always an interesting adventure. I ask anyone have a meal they want or don’t want for the week ahead? Sometimes I get answers other times not so much. Richard is better at this then the boys. But, they are often good at coming up with things we have ALL THE TIME. I’m the type of person who likes variety, my guys like routine, or so it seems.
This week we are having:
- BBQ chicken lasagna (leftovers)
- hamburgers and hot dogs – haven’t had this in a while actually other than eating out
- TBD- probably go out to Zuppas since we haven’t been there in a while and the boys have mentioned going
- steak with sweet potato fries
- pork tenderloin and apple sauce- haven’t had this in a while too
- make your own scramblers
- Tex-Mex chicken totchos – think nachos on tater tots

Does anyone need anything else from the grocery store? crickets! But then they complain when I didn’t buy x, y, or z. Or like yesterday at the oddest time they will say can you pick up Alfredo sauce? It’s not as bad on the days they think of it while I’m actually making the list. The worst is the day after I went shopping, oh I needed you to get _______. Too bad, you’ll have to wait until next week. Remember to add it to the list.
So I’m going to get ready to head to the store. Typically I’d go to the gym first since they are on the same street, but not today. I am not sure what I did, but my hip has been killing me since Tuesday. It hurts to walk up and down the stairs, it hurts to get on and off the chair, it just hurts. I refuse to stop moving. Yesterday the four of us went on a walk around the neighborhood after dinner and I walked 1.47 miles and we do not live in a flat neighborhood. (looking at my map my hike info the elevation change was 128 ft between the min and max elevations). But, I’m not going to go to the gym and push it to the point of doing more damage to whatever I did. UGH getting old sucks!
So I will head out in the snow… yes it is snowing AGAIN. Yesterday we had temps in the upper 50s for a high and right now it is 33F and snowing. Here I thought it was spring. Ok mother nature we get it… we aren’t in Florida anymore. It isn’t 80s and sunny 90% of the year. But, can’t we move onto the season of spring? You know the season of renewal and rebirth? The season of flowers, allergies and sunshine? The season that leads into summer? I’m ready… any day now! At least looking at the 10 day forecast at this point there is no snow forecast after today and there are actually days in the 60s. I’ll take it… please!
So, what’s on your menu this week ahead? Do you like to have the same things over and over or do you like to switch things up pretty regularly? Has spring sprung where you live or are you suffering with the season of Spinter like me?
So before I moved to PA, I would menu plan before I went to the grocery store. In FL, I would stand in the kitchen at the island. I would write the menu item on the chalk board. Then search the fridge, freezer and pantry for which items I need. Them make my grocery list. This was all done at the same time. Everyone who wanted to contribute to meal suggestions needed to be in the kitchen, or ear shot, while I made the menu. The meals were listed on the chalkboard and that is what we ate that week. I could move around what day we had what, but I knew what we were having and so did my guys.
Living in the townhouse we have a tiny fridge and freezer so I don’t have extra food hanging around. We already purchased our new appliances for the new house and a bigger fridge and a free standing freezer were on the list! We still sit down normally and make a plan and grocery list. But, I’ve found that I don’t always pick all my meals since I’m buying all the items weekly. Sometimes I just wait and see what hits me in the meat section.
Today I was off to the boys school for a volunteer meeting and then the first PTO meeting. Originally I didn’t think I’d get to the store. I knew I needed to come home and make apple pie taquitos to take the ladies night in our new neighborhood. When I did get home I decided I had time to shop. Off to Giant Eagle Market District I went. So where did I start shopping when you don’t have a menu plan? In the meat section. I picked our proteins and then went back to the produce dept to get the fruits and veggies to go with the meals.
So here’s what on our menu this week:
- Pork chops with homemade applesauce (bone in pork chops were on sale)
- Spaghetti squash mock lasagna with meatballs (leftover sauce and meatballs are being pulled out of the fridge)
- Scramblers with bacon
- Fish tacos (frozen talipia was on sale)
- Chicken something (that’s called I don’t know what kind of chicken yet… but I’ll figure it out)… my go to protein!
- Pressed sandwiches
